I want to share with you some stories from clients of mine every once in a while. People in the trenches who are actively working on improving their lives and seeing amazing results.
I’ll share a story of Elena, age 34 who gave me permission to share some of her progress.
Elena struggled with work-life balance. As a front-end developer in Seattle, she used to work in-house. however, after COVID, the company she worked for began to shift and many software engineers employed there were asked to take remote positions.
At first, it was great. She even received a promotion to be a team leader. However, Elena hated how she always felt at work. Her team would constantly call her in the morning and at night.
Basically, she was never able to clock out. This led to her no longer enjoying being a software engineer and feeling overwhelmed more often.
Eventually, Elena came across my content and reached out. We set up a plan after taking a look at her goals and her daily schedule.
The plan: Set a hard boundary on when you’ll refuse to answer work-related calls. We decided that 6pm was her work cut-off time and any work-related calls, emails, texts, etc after that time would be ignored unless it was EXTREMELY URGENT. We would focus on tracking two things:
1. Track how often she committed to not answering her phone after 6 pm
2. Track how you feel at the end of each day on a scale of 1–10
Within a month, Elena found herself significantly happier and in control of her life. Her sense of happiness and enjoyment of her job improved. And, the best part, she realized that her team could manage to answer their questions without her.
How can this strategy apply to your life?
First thing: Determine what your true problems are. This is one of the first things we do at Productivity Accelerator. It can be difficult to dissect a problem when you’re “in the game” so to speak.
This is why we help you see your situation as an unbiased 3rd party.
Second thing: Create a measurable metric that you believe contributes to your success. In this scenario, we tracked her happiness and whether she committed to her boundary.
Finally: Assess how it all affects your life. While Elena’s mood improved and her burnout faded, there’s a chance that her disdain for her job was related to something else. That’s fine. This is why we’re constantly reevaluating and assessing our performance.
Remember, the key is to constantly improve some of the smaller, yet major aspects of your life so that they stack up and lead to massive results.
Keep Conquering,
Levi
